Is a Lisbon city tour worthwhile?

Lisbon, the enchanting capital of Portugal, seduces visitors with its unique charm, rich historical backdrop and breathtaking views of the River Tagus. The hop-on hop-off bus is a particularly flexible and convenient way to explore the city.

A key advantage of the hop-on hop-off concept is its flexibility. You can hop on and off at different stops as you wish to explore the most important sights. This allows you to create a customised itinerary that suits your personal interests and time constraints. Whether the imposing Torre de Belém, the historic Alfama neighbourhood or the cosmopolitan Chiado - the bus takes you directly to the highlights of Lisbon.

Another plus is the informative audio guide, which is available in several languages. During the tour, you will hear interesting facts, stories and background information about the places you visit. This makes the city tour not only informative, but also entertaining.

The elevated position of the buses also offers a unique perspective of the city. You can see the architectural splendour of Lisbon from a new, impressive angle and move effortlessly between the different parts of the city.

Last but not least, the hop-on hop-off bus offers a stress-free way to get around the city. Especially for visitors who are not familiar with public transport, the bus is a convenient alternative. The regular departure times and clear signage at the bus stops make it easier to find your way around and enable travellers to make the most of their precious time in Lisbon.

All in all, the hop-on hop-off bus in Lisbon is a practical and flexible option for anyone who wants to make the most of their city exploration.

Yellow Bus is part of the public transport company Carris and offers city tours in Lisbon with three different vehicles.

The yellow double-decker buses have a partially open upper deck so that you can enjoy a wonderful view and have a clear view of the city's many photo opportunities.

In addition to the buses, you can also take the Hills Tramcar, which is particularly useful in the narrow and steep streets of Amalfa and Barria Alto.

Last but not least, you can also take a boat trip, the Yellow Boat, on the Rio Tejo.

Multilingual audio guides are available on all means of transport during the journey, providing you with interesting information about the sights.

Lisbon Sightseeing / Gray Line

In Lisbon, there is a co-operation between Lisbon Sightseeing and Gray Line. The bright red double-decker buses operate on 3 routes (or 4 in summer) in the city. Only on the Castle Route are smaller, single-decker buses used, which are easier to manoeuvre through the narrow and steep streets.

Free Wi-Fi and multilingual audio guides are available on all buses.

Timetable: Belém Route

  • First departure: 9:30 a.m.
  • Last departure: 5:00 p.m.
  • Frequency: every 25 minutes
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Starting point: Marquês de Pombal Square

As with Yellow Bus, the Belém Tour is the most important route, taking in almost all of Lisbon's sights.

Timetable: Oriente Route

  • First departure: 9:45 a.m.
  • Last departure: 5:00 p.m.
  • Frequency: every 30 minutes
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Starting point: Marquês de Pombal

The Oriente Route is comparable to the Modern Lisbon tour of Yellow Bus. Some of the stops overlap with the Belém route, so you can switch between the two routes at these stops.

Timetable: Cascais Route

  • Departure Lisbon: 08:30/ 10:00/ 11:45 and 16:00
  • Departure Cascais: 10:15/ 11:45/ 15:00 and 18:00
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Starting point: Praça Marquês de Pombal (Lisbon) and Casa das Histórias Paula Rego (Cascais)

This line only runs in summer and takes you to the beaches along the Costa do Sol.

Timetable: Castle Route

  • First departure: 9:30 a.m.
  • Last departure: 5:00 p.m.
  • Frequency: every 15 minutes
  • Duration: 1:30 hours
  • Starting point: Marquês de Pombal

This route is not travelled by the large double-decker buses, but by slightly smaller vehicles. These are better able to negotiate the steep and narrow streets.
